Program overview
In simple terms, underwater acoustics engineering is the study of "sound underwater." You might wonder: How do we hear sounds underwater? How can we use sound to "see" things? This major teaches you all that. Core courses include principles of underwater acoustics, sonar technology, signal processing, ocean acoustics, transducer design, and more. You'll learn how to design sonar systems (like underwater radar), how to extract useful signals from noisy ocean background, and how to enable underwater devices to "talk" to each other. This major is suitable for students who enjoy physics, math, and electronics, and have a curiosity about the ocean. If you have strong hands-on skills and like doing experiments and coding, it will be a great fit. Chinese universities have strong capabilities in underwater acoustics, such as the National Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology at Harbin Engineering University and the Acoustics Engineering at Northwestern Polytechnical University, both world-renowned. Many professors have directly participated in major national marine projects, giving you exposure to real underwater equipment.
