Program overview
Smart Grid Information Engineering is a deeply interdisciplinary field that merges electrical engineering with information technology. In simple terms, it equips traditional power grids with a "brain" and "nervous system," enabling them to automatically detect faults, optimize energy usage, and integrate clean energy sources like solar and wind. You'll study core electrical courses such as power system analysis and relay protection, while also mastering communication principles, the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence—because smart grids are data-driven. Core courses include: Circuit Theory, Electrical Machinery, Power Electronics, Power System Analysis, Smart Grid Communication Technology, Embedded Systems, Cloud Computing and Edge Computing, and more. There are plenty of lab sessions where you'll build small-scale grid models and use simulation software to handle fault scenarios. Who is this program for? If you enjoy both physics and programming, like solving real-world problems hands-on, and care about energy and the environment, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique advantages in this field: State Grid is the world's largest utility company, and many universities (such as North China Electric Power University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University) have real smart grid labs that can even access grid data for research. International students can also participate in "Belt and Road" energy cooperation projects and work on cross-border engineering cases.
