Program overview
Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics, simply put, is about how to make circuits smaller, faster, and more power-efficient, and how to use these circuits to create chips, sensors, memory devices, etc. The phones, computers, smartwatches, and even car control systems you use every day rely on the technology from this major. Core courses include semiconductor physics, integrated circuit design, microelectronics processes, device modeling, embedded systems, etc. You will learn the complete chain from materials to devices to systems, requiring a foundation in physics and mathematics, as well as hands-on experiments and simulations. It's suitable for those who like to take apart electronic devices, don't dislike physics and math, and are willing to tinker in the lab. China is developing rapidly in this field. Many universities (such as Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, and the Institute of Microelectronics of CAS) have strong faculty and facilities, and some labs can even directly tape out (manufacture chip samples). Moreover, China is vigorously promoting chip self-sufficiency, so this major is highly valued domestically, with substantial resource investment, and international students can also access cutting-edge topics.
