Program overview
Underwater Acoustics Engineering is essentially about learning how to use sound waves to 'see' and 'hear' underwater. Since electromagnetic waves attenuate quickly in water, sound waves become the primary means of long-distance information transmission underwater. This program teaches you the propagation laws of sound waves in water, how to design sonar systems (similar to underwater radar), and how to process echo signals to identify targets. Core courses include Principles of Underwater Acoustics, Sonar Technology, Signals and Systems, Digital Signal Processing, and Ocean Acoustics. If you enjoy physics, math, and electronics, and have a passion for the ocean and hands-on experiments, this program is a great fit. Universities in China like Harbin Engineering University and Northwestern Polytechnical University have strong capabilities in underwater acoustics, with national key laboratories and sea trial sites, giving students opportunities to participate in real oceanographic expeditions or national defense projects, gaining valuable practical experience.
