Program overview
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Science and Engineering, simply put, teaches you how to deal with natural disasters like earthquakes, typhoons, floods, and landslides. You'll learn how they occur, how to monitor them, how to issue early warnings, and how to design buildings and cities to reduce damage. Core courses include seismology, meteorological disaster science, geological disaster science, engineering disaster prevention principles, remote sensing and GIS applications, and disaster risk assessment. Students with a solid foundation in math and physics will find it easier, but if you're curious about the Earth and enjoy solving real-world problems, you'll do just fine. Chinese universities have a unique advantage in this field: many schools collaborate directly with the China Earthquake Administration and the China Meteorological Administration, giving students access to real cases and frontline data. For example, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology offer strong hands-on training, even taking students on field trips to study fault lines and internships at weather stations. This major is perfect for those who want to use science to make a real difference, don't mind occasional fieldwork, and are obsessed with "predicting the future."
