Program overview
Exploration Technology and Engineering, simply put, is like giving the Earth a CT scan. You learn how to use physical methods such as seismic waves, electromagnetic fields, and gravity to 'see' what's underground—whether it's oil, natural gas, groundwater, or stable rock layers suitable for building a large bridge. Core courses include: Geophysical Exploration (seismic exploration, electrical exploration, magnetic exploration), Fundamentals of Geology, Well Logging Technology, Remote Sensing Principles, Computer Data Processing, etc. You'll work with many instruments and software, such as seismographs, resistivity meters, MATLAB, Python, and more. This major suits students who enjoy hands-on work, are curious about nature, and don't mind occasional fieldwork. If you did well in high school physics and math, you'll find it easier. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field, such as China University of Petroleum (East China) and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). They collaborate closely with major domestic energy companies and engineering units, giving students opportunities to participate in real projects—like seismic exploration in western deserts or engineering geological surveys in coastal cities.
