Program overview
Resource and Environmental Big Data Engineering is an emerging interdisciplinary field. Simply put, it teaches you how to use big data and artificial intelligence to solve real-world problems like mineral exploration, water management, disaster prevention, and environmental protection. You don't need to be a geology expert, but you must learn how to extract valuable insights from massive datasets of geology, remote sensing, and meteorology. Core courses include: Python/R programming, machine learning, spatial data analysis, geostatistics, environmental monitoring technology, cloud computing and storage, etc. Chinese universities have unique advantages in this field—for example, many collaborate with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the China Geological Survey, giving students access to real national geological survey data and supercomputing centers. This major is ideal for students who are interested in computers but don't want to code all day, enjoy the outdoors and nature, and want to use technology to solve practical problems. If you have a solid math foundation and like hands-on projects, this major will give you a strong sense of achievement.
