Program overview
Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, simply put, teaches you how to find treasures beneath the earth—oil, natural gas, coal, metal minerals, groundwater, and even geothermal resources. This is an applied engineering discipline, with a core focus on "exploration" and "evaluation." You'll learn to use seismic waves, electromagnetic fields, and drilling techniques to "see" the structure thousands of meters underground, determine where deposits are, how large they are, and whether they can be extracted. Core courses include: Fundamentals of Earth Science, Petrology and Mineralogy, Structural Geology, Geophysical Exploration (seismic, electrical, magnetic methods), Geochemical Exploration, Drilling Engineering, Resource Evaluation and Reserve Calculation. Many Chinese universities (such as China University of Geosciences and China University of Petroleum) offer strong field teaching resources, taking you to observe strata in the wild, intern at oil fields, and even work with real seismic data on projects. Who is this major for? If you enjoy the outdoors, don't mind field trips, are curious about how the Earth formed and how resources are distributed, and have strong hands-on skills (e.g., operating instruments, processing data), this major will suit you well. A solid foundation in math and physics is an advantage, but more importantly, you need to be willing to work hard—field exploration often involves hiking and camping.
