Program overview
Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, simply put, is the study of "energy" — how to efficiently convert fuels, solar energy, wind power, and other sources into the power and heat we need while minimizing pollution. Core courses include Engineering Thermodynamics (understanding the basic laws of energy conversion), Fluid Mechanics (studying the flow of gases and liquids), Heat Transfer (how heat is transmitted), Combustion Science (how fuels burn), and Principles of Power Machinery (how engines and turbines work). This major suits students interested in physics and math, who enjoy tinkering with things, and care about energy and environmental issues. Chinese universities have a strong tradition of engineering practice in this field. For example, Tsinghua University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have world-class labs and industry-university cooperation projects in gas turbines, internal combustion engines, and new energy power generation, offering international students opportunities to participate in real engineering R&D.
