Program overview
Fluid Machinery and Engineering, simply put, is about making liquids and gases flow smarter and more efficiently inside machines. The water pump you use daily, the air conditioner compressor, aircraft engines, and even the blood pump in your heart—all rely on this field. Core courses include Fluid Mechanics, Principles of Turbomachinery, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Pump and Fan Design. You'll learn how to simulate fluid flow using software, optimize blade shapes for higher efficiency, and tackle real-world issues like cavitation and vibration. Chinese universities have strong expertise in this area. For example, Tsinghua University excels in gas turbines, Xi'an Jiaotong University in compressors, and Jiangsu University in pumps—each with robust research teams and experimental platforms. Many labs boast Asia's largest test rigs, capable of full-scale machine testing. This major suits students who enjoy physics and math, have strong hands-on skills, and are interested in machinery and energy. If you ever took apart a fan or played with a water gun as a kid, you might be a natural fit.
