Program overview
Textile Engineering might sound like "making clothes," but it's so much more. It studies how to turn natural or chemical fibers into various functional materials—from the breathable sportswear you wear, to carbon fiber composites used in aircraft, to absorbable sutures in medical applications. Core courses include textile materials science, spinning technology, weaving techniques, dyeing and finishing, textile design, and the increasingly popular smart textiles and nanotechnology. If you enjoy hands-on experiments, are interested in materials science, or want to explore the intersection of "technology + fashion," this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have deep expertise in textiles—for example, Donghua University, Tianjin Polytechnic University, and Jiangnan University—with national labs and industry partnerships that give you access to cutting-edge equipment and projects.
