Program overview
Textile Science and Engineering might sound a bit traditional, but it's actually much more interesting than you think. Simply put, this major studies how to turn fibers into various fabrics, and then turn those fabrics into clothing, home textiles, and even composite materials for aircraft. Core courses include Textile Materials Science (understanding various fibers and yarns), Spinning and Weaving Processes (how to spin fibers into yarn and weave them into fabric), Dyeing and Finishing Technology (coloring and functional treatment of fabrics), Textile Design (making fabrics both beautiful and practical), and Modern Smart Textiles (e.g., sportswear that can measure heart rate, heated down jackets). China has a natural advantage in this field—it's the world's largest textile producer and exporter, and many universities (such as Donghua University, Tiangong University) have strong labs and school-enterprise cooperation projects. This major suits students who are interested in materials science, process technology, and fashion design—those with strong hands-on skills will be in high demand.
