Program overview
Fashion Design and Engineering — sounds like a tailor or designer? Actually, it's much more than that. This major is an interdisciplinary blend of engineering and art, focusing on how to turn a piece of fabric into a garment that is both beautiful and comfortable, while also considering efficient and eco-friendly production. At the graduate level, you'll dive deeper into areas like smart clothing, functional fabrics, digital pattern making, and supply chain optimization. You'll study textile materials (which fabrics are breathable, waterproof, or stretchy), garment structure design (how to cut for a perfect fit), garment technology (the art of sewing and pressing), CAD for fashion (using computers to draft patterns and simulate fittings), as well as production management, quality control, and marketing. Chinese universities excel in this field — Donghua University, Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, and Jiangnan University, for example, have strong partnerships with apparel companies and labs equipped with 3D body scanners and intelligent sewing robots. Who is this major for? If you're passionate about fashion and enjoy hands-on problem-solving, and don't mind math and physics, this is a great fit. You don't need to be a drawing prodigy, but you should have an eye for aesthetics and logical thinking.
