Program overview
Civil and Commercial Law is a core branch of legal studies, focusing on the rights and obligations between individuals and enterprises. Simply put, it covers how to handle contract disputes, company formation and operations, tort compensation, marriage and family property, and intellectual property protection. Graduate-level courses go deeper, including General Principles of Civil Law, Property Law, Contract Law, Tort Liability Law, Company Law, Securities Law, Insurance Law, Negotiable Instruments Law, and Intellectual Property Law. Chinese universities have a unique advantage in this field: the Civil Code, effective in 2021, is one of the newest civil law codifications in the world, and many professors participated in its drafting, offering firsthand practical experience. If you are interested in commercial transactions, individual rights protection, or pursuing a career as a lawyer, legal counsel, or judge, this program is a great fit. Additionally, many schools (such as China University of Political Science and Law, Wuhan University, and East China University of Political Science and Law) offer a specialized track in Foreign-Related Civil and Commercial Law, focusing on cross-border investment and international trade disputes, which is very welcoming to international students.
