Program overview
Optical engineering, simply put, is an engineering discipline focused on how to "play with light." The camera on your phone, fiber optic broadband, and laser scalpels in hospitals all owe their existence to optical engineering. Core courses include applied optics, physical optics, laser principles, optoelectronics, and fiber optic communications. You'll learn how to design optical systems, how to transmit light signals farther and more stably, and how to use lasers for precision measurements. This major is ideal for students who enjoy physics and hands-on experiments, and are interested in imaging, communications, and precision manufacturing. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, Zhejiang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Changchun University of Science and Technology all have strong optical engineering labs, with many professors directly involved in major national research projects, giving students access to cutting-edge equipment. Moreover, China's rapid development in optical communications, laser manufacturing, and optical inspection means international students can learn highly practical skills here.
