Program overview
Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, simply put, is the study of how to build big ships, offshore platforms, and underwater equipment. You might think this major is pretty cool—after all, who wouldn't want to design a massive cargo vessel or a deep-sea submersible? Core courses include fluid mechanics (understanding how water moves ships), structural mechanics (making sure ships don't fall apart), ship design (from sketch to finished product), marine engineering environment (effects of wind, waves, and currents), and ship power systems (how to make ships go). If you're good at math and physics and enjoy hands-on work, this major will suit you well. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harbin Engineering University, and Dalian University of Technology all have strong towing tank labs and real ship projects where students can directly participate in actual design. Plus, China is the world's largest shipbuilding country, with abundant teaching resources, and many courses incorporate the latest green ship and smart ship technologies.
