Program overview
Marine Engineering and Technology, simply put, is an engineering major that teaches you how to 'deal with' the ocean. You'll learn how to design ships that can withstand wind and waves, offshore drilling platforms, submarine pipelines, and even underwater robots. Core courses include fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, ship and offshore structure design, marine environmental science, and underwater technology. If you enjoy hands-on work, are curious about the ocean, and aren't afraid of math and physics, this major is a great fit. Many Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has a deep-water test basin, Harbin Engineering University is strong in polar ships, and Dalian University of Technology focuses on offshore engineering. Classes aren't just theory; there are plenty of experiments and project practices, like using software to simulate hull stress or designing a small underwater vehicle.
