Program overview
The Marine Robotics program, simply put, teaches you how to build robots that can work autonomously in the deep sea. You'll dive into core courses like mechanical design, electronic circuits, automatic control, underwater communication, and artificial intelligence, along with foundational knowledge of the marine environment. For example, you'll learn how to make robots withstand high pressure in the deep ocean, transmit high-definition images underwater, and navigate using sonar. Many Chinese universities (such as Harbin Engineering University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Ocean University of China) have dedicated marine robotics labs, complete with their own test pools and nearshore testing sites, so students can get hands-on with real equipment. This major is a great fit for those who love tinkering, are curious about the ocean, and don't mind occasional sea breezes. A solid foundation in math and physics is essential, and programming skills will be honed through projects.
