Program overview
In simple terms, this program is about how to use nuclear energy and technology safely while protecting people and the environment from radiation. You'll learn how radiation is produced, measured, and shielded against, as well as how to handle radioactive waste. Core courses include Radiation Detection and Measurement, Principles of Radiation Protection, Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring, and Nuclear Safety Regulations. There are plenty of lab sessions where you'll get hands-on with various detectors, and even visit nuclear facilities for field trips. Chinese universities have a clear advantage in this field: the country's rapid nuclear power development means many schools have direct partnerships with nuclear power plants and environmental protection agencies, giving you access to real projects. For example, Tsinghua, USTC, and Xi'an Jiaotong University all have strong nuclear science teams with advanced lab equipment. This program suits students who don't mind physics and chemistry and care about environmental safety—you don't need to be a genius, but you do need to be detail-oriented and responsible.
