Program overview
Nuclear Science and Engineering, simply put, is about how to safely 'extract' energy from atomic nuclei. You will learn how to design, control, and ensure the safety of nuclear reactors, as well as the nuclear fuel cycle and radiation protection. Core courses include nuclear reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, nuclear safety, radiation detection and protection, and nuclear fuel cycle. This major suits students who are interested in both physics and engineering and are meticulous and rigorous — after all, nuclear safety is no small matter. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field. For example, Tsinghua University has a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor test facility, Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are strong in reactor thermal hydraulics, and Harbin Engineering University has deep expertise in nuclear power. Many schools also have joint laboratories with CNNC and CGN, allowing students to work on real projects.
