Program overview
Environmental Engineering is a practical major under the engineering discipline. Simply put, it teaches you to use scientific and engineering methods to control pollution and protect the environment. You will learn how to treat wastewater, purify exhaust gases, manage solid waste, and also cover topics such as soil remediation and environmental monitoring. Core courses include Environmental Chemistry, Fluid Mechanics, Water Treatment Engineering, Air Pollution Control Engineering, and Solid Waste Treatment and Resource Recovery. There are many lab sessions and internships, such as visiting wastewater treatment plants and waste incineration plants, or designing a small water purification device yourself. This major is suitable for students who are passionate about environmental protection, enjoy hands-on problem-solving, and don't mind occasionally dealing with dirty water and foul odors. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field. For example, the Environmental Engineering programs at Tsinghua University, Tongji University, and Harbin Institute of Technology are globally ranked, and many schools have international cooperation projects that provide access to cutting-edge technologies. Additionally, China is vigorously addressing environmental pollution, so there are many real-world cases to study, such as the treatment of cyanobacteria in Taihu Lake and the prevention and control of haze in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. These experiences are also highly recognized internationally.
