Program overview
Environmental Science and Engineering, simply put, teaches you how to use scientific and engineering approaches to tackle real-world issues like water pollution, air pollution, soil contamination, and waste management. You'll dive into core courses such as environmental chemistry, ecology, environmental monitoring, water treatment engineering, air pollution control, and solid waste treatment. There are plenty of lab sessions—like sampling from rivers, analyzing water quality, and designing wastewater treatment processes. This major is perfect for those who are curious about nature, enjoy hands-on problem-solving, and don't mind occasionally encountering unusual smells (like at a wastewater treatment plant). A distinct advantage of Chinese universities is that many have real-world engineering project collaborations—for example, working with local environmental protection bureaus or water utilities on research topics. You'll get access to a wealth of cases and data accumulated during China's rapid urbanization. Plus, China is at the forefront of practices in new energy, electric vehicles, and waste sorting, which are all integrated into the curriculum.
