Program overview
Architecture is not just about drawing and building houses—it's a field that teaches you how to turn creativity into reality. You'll learn how to design a building, a neighborhood, or even a city, while considering structural safety, material selection, lighting, ventilation, environmental sustainability, and human experience. Core courses include architectural design (from villas to large public buildings), architectural history and theory (understanding styles across eras), building structures (ensuring buildings don't fall down), building physics (acoustic, light, and thermal environments), and computer-aided design (CAD, BIM, SketchUp, etc.). If you enjoy drawing, making models by hand, have a sensitivity to space, and are willing to learn some engineering knowledge, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique strengths in architecture—for example, Tsinghua University, Tongji University, and Southeast University—where they integrate traditional Chinese garden and courtyard concepts with modern technology. Many courses also include field trips to ancient buildings or urban renewal projects, offering plenty of hands-on experience. At the graduate level, the focus shifts to research capabilities, such as sustainable design, digital fabrication, and urban design.
