Program overview
This program focuses on the electrical systems and control technologies of rail transit vehicles (such as high-speed trains, subways, and light rails). Simply put, it's about how to make trains run safely and efficiently, how to brake, how to supply power, and how to communicate with the dispatch center. Core courses include circuit analysis, electric motors and drives, power electronics, train traction control, fundamentals of rail transit signaling, and power supply systems. You'll also learn some programming and automation control. China is particularly strong in this field because it has the world's largest high-speed rail and subway networks. Many universities (e.g., Southwest Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University) have specialized labs and training bases where you can debug simulated train systems hands-on. This program suits students who enjoy hands-on work, are interested in railways or urban transportation, and don't mind physics and math.
