Program overview
Smart transportation is an interdisciplinary field combining traffic engineering with AI, big data, and the Internet of Things. Simply put, it uses cameras, sensors, GPS, and mobile data to optimize traffic lights, predict congestion, plan routes, and even enable self-driving cars through algorithms. Core courses include: Traffic Flow Theory (understanding how vehicles move), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Machine Learning and Data Mining, Connected Vehicles and V2X Communication, Traffic Big Data Analysis, and Fundamentals of Autonomous Driving Technology. Many Chinese universities (e.g., Southeast University, Tongji University, Beihang University) have dedicated smart transportation labs and collaborate with companies like Baidu, Huawei, and Didi on real-world projects. This field is ideal for students who are interested in transportation (e.g., studying road networks and travel behavior) and enjoy programming and data analysis.
