Program overview
Naval architecture is essentially about learning how to build massive vessels that can sail safely at sea—from cargo ships and cruise liners to drilling platforms and warships. You'll study why ships float (ship principles), how they withstand waves (structural mechanics), how they move (propulsion systems), and how to turn blueprints into real ships (shipbuilding processes). Core courses include ship design, fluid mechanics, material mechanics, and marine electrical systems. If you enjoy hands-on work, have an interest in mechanics and the ocean, and have a solid foundation in math and physics, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities excel in this field—such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harbin Engineering University, and Dalian University of Technology—where many professors have contributed to the design of domestic aircraft carriers and large LNG carriers, keeping teaching and research closely aligned with industry practice.
