Program overview
Mineral Processing Engineering, simply put, is about how to "pick out" the useful components from ore and turn them into usable concentrates. For example, turning iron ore into iron concentrate, copper ore into copper concentrate, or even recovering lithium and cobalt from spent batteries. Core courses include mineralogy, crushing and grinding, gravity separation, flotation, magnetic separation, chemical processing, as well as process design and automation control. You'll get hands-on experience with various beneficiation equipment in the lab and simulate processes using computers. This major is perfect for students who are interested in chemistry and physics, enjoy hands-on experiments, and care about resource recycling. China is a global leader in mineral processing—universities like Central South University, Northeastern University, and China University of Mining and Technology have strong faculty and experimental platforms, with many professors directly involved in the design and renovation of large-scale mines. If you're passionate about "turning waste into treasure" or "green mining," this major will be a great fit.
