Program overview
Mining engineering might sound a bit "hardcore," but it's actually closely tied to our daily lives—from the metals in our phones to the coal that generates electricity. This major teaches you how to extract mineral resources from underground safely, economically, and environmentally, and then process them initially. Core courses include rock mechanics (understanding how rocks bear stress), mine geology (finding and evaluating ore bodies), mining methods (the most cost-effective way to dig), mineral processing (turning ore into concentrate), mine safety (preventing collapses and gas leaks), and digital mining (using software and automation to manage mines). Chinese universities have a natural advantage in this field: China is one of the world's largest mining producers, and many universities (such as China University of Mining and Technology and Central South University) have real mine internship bases and national-level labs, allowing you to experience everything from traditional blasting to intelligent unmanned mining. If you enjoy hands-on work, are interested in geology and machinery, or want to solve practical problems in energy and resources, this major is a great fit.
