Program overview
Petroleum engineering, in simple terms, teaches you how to safely and efficiently extract oil and natural gas from underground. You'll learn the entire process from exploration and drilling to production. Core courses include reservoir physics, fluid flow mechanics, drilling engineering, production engineering, and reservoir engineering—sounds a bit intense, but there are plenty of hands-on opportunities, like simulating reservoir conditions in the lab or using professional software to design well locations. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field. For example, China University of Petroleum (Beijing/East China) and Southwest Petroleum University have close partnerships with major domestic oilfields, giving students access to real field data and even on-site internships. This major suits those who enjoy hands-on work, are curious about the energy industry, and don't mind occasional fieldwork (like visiting oilfields). A solid foundation in math and physics helps, but the school will start from the basics if you're willing to learn.
