Program overview
Carbon Storage Science and Engineering, simply put, studies how to 'capture' carbon dioxide from factories and power plants, either bury it deep underground (e.g., depleted oil and gas fields, saline aquifers) or convert it into useful things (e.g., fuels, chemicals). This major is a newly established interdisciplinary field in Chinese universities in recent years to address global climate change, integrating knowledge from geology, chemistry, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, and more. Core courses include: Fundamentals of Geology, Fluid Mechanics, Principles and Technologies of Carbon Capture, CO₂ Transport and Storage, Carbon Resource Utilization, Environmental Monitoring and Safety Assessment, etc. Who is it for? If you are interested in energy and environmental protection, enjoy hands-on experiments, don't mind learning some physics, chemistry, and geology, and want to tackle big issues like global warming, this major is a great fit. China may not have been the earliest in this field, but it is developing rapidly. Universities like China University of Petroleum (Beijing), China University of Mining and Technology, and North China Electric Power University have strong faculty and experimental platforms. Some schools even have dedicated CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) labs and offer opportunities for field internships at oil fields.
