Program overview
Smart Mining Engineering is a 'hybrid' of traditional mining with AI, IoT, big data, and robotics. You'll not only learn mining fundamentals like geology and rock mechanics, but also tackle hardcore courses such as Python programming, sensor networks, digital twins, and mine automation systems. Simply put, you'll learn how to equip mines with 'eyes' (sensors), a 'brain' (AI algorithms), and 'hands and feet' (unmanned equipment). Universities like China University of Mining and Technology and Central South University offer strong experimental platforms, such as virtual simulation mines and 5G remote control labs, giving you hands-on experience. This major is perfect for students who enjoy both hands-on work and tech tinkering, and who don't mind going underground but would rather sit in a control room commanding robots.
