Program overview
Wood Science and Technology, simply put, is about how to turn a tree into useful things while making the process more efficient and environmentally friendly. You'll learn core courses like the physical and chemical properties of wood, drying and preservation, bonding techniques, and wood product design and manufacturing. For example, why do some woods crack easily? How can ordinary wood be made fireproof and waterproof? How can wood scraps be turned into eco-friendly panels? These are all covered. China has a unique edge in this field because we're the world's largest wood processing and furniture manufacturing country. Many universities (like Nanjing Forestry University and Beijing Forestry University) have strong experimental bases and school-enterprise cooperation projects, giving you direct exposure to the entire chain from logs to smart homes. This major suits students who enjoy hands-on work, are interested in materials science, and don't mind occasional field trips to factories or forests. If you're passionate about environmental protection and sustainable development, there are plenty of opportunities to research how wood can replace non-renewable materials like plastic and steel.
