Program overview
Nanoscience and Engineering is the study of matter at the scale of 1 to 100 nanometers (about one ten-thousandth the diameter of a human hair). At this scale, materials exhibit entirely different properties—stronger, more conductive, more catalytic. You'll learn how to create nanoparticles, use microscopes to see atoms, and apply nanomaterials to batteries, chips, and medicines. Core courses include Nanomaterials Science, Nanoscale Characterization Techniques (like scanning tunneling microscopy and transmission electron microscopy), Nanoelectronics, and Nanobiotechnology. This major is perfect for students who love hands-on experiments, are comfortable with physics and chemistry, and enjoy interdisciplinary thinking. Many top Chinese universities excel in this field—Tsinghua, Peking, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong, and Zhejiang University all have cutting-edge nanolabs with state-of-the-art equipment and frontier research topics.
