Program overview
Nuclear Engineering is an energy and power major under the engineering discipline. Simply put, it studies how to safely convert the energy released from nuclear fission or fusion into electricity or heat. You might think nuclear energy is mysterious or even dangerous, but this major teaches you how to use science and engineering to make it controllable and reliable. Core courses include Nuclear Reactor Physics (understanding how neutrons "dance" in the core), Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics (how to efficiently remove heat), Nuclear Safety (designing "firewalls" to prevent accidents), Radiation Detection and Protection (protecting yourself and the environment), as well as Nuclear Electronics and Nuclear Fuel Cycle. Lab sessions involve simulated reactors, radiation measurement instruments, and some schools even have small research reactors for visits. This major suits students who are interested in both physics and engineering, and who are meticulous and rigorous. If you enjoy tackling complex systems and care about energy and environmental issues, this is a great fit. Chinese universities have distinctive strengths in this field: Tsinghua University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Harbin Engineering University all have strong nuclear engineering programs, with many labs directly involved in national major nuclear power projects, such as the development of "Hualong One." You'll also get exposure to cutting-edge technologies like Generation IV reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
