Program overview
Light Chemical Engineering, simply put, is about using chemistry and engineering techniques to turn natural raw materials into everyday items. For example, the paper you use, the leather you wear, cosmetics, detergents, and even some food additives are all related to this major. Core courses include Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Principles, Light Chemical Engineering Processes (such as papermaking, leather, and dyeing/finishing processes), Equipment and Automation, etc. There are many lab sessions where you'll operate reactors and test material properties. Chinese universities have strong industry backgrounds in this field—for instance, South China University of Technology and Shaanxi University of Science and Technology for papermaking, Sichuan University and Qilu University of Technology for leather, and Jiangnan University for daily chemicals. It's suitable for students who enjoy hands-on lab work, don't mind chemistry, and want to learn practical skills.
