Program overview
Synthetic biology is a 'creator' major under bioengineering — you learn how to reassemble biological parts like DNA and proteins, just like building with LEGO blocks, turning microbes or cells into miniature factories that produce anything you want, from cancer drugs and biodegradable plastics to lab-grown meat. Core courses include molecular biology, gene editing (CRISPR), metabolic engineering, bioinformatics, and synthetic biology design. You'll do lots of experiments: designing gene circuits, engineering yeast, and simulating biological systems on computers. This major is perfect for those who love biology and enjoy hands-on tinkering — if you were fascinated by biology experiments in high school and don't mind programming or engineering, it's a great fit. Chinese universities are moving fast in this field: Tsinghua, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences all have top labs, and many schools collaborate closely with companies — like the Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, where students can directly participate in real projects.
