Program overview
Biomedical engineering, simply put, is about 'playing with' biology using an engineering mindset. You might learn how to use microorganisms to produce medicines (like insulin), modify plants to make them more pest-resistant, or use enzymes to create eco-friendly materials. Core courses include biochemistry, molecular biology, genetic engineering, fermentation engineering, cell engineering, and bioseparation engineering. If you love biology but don't want to just memorize theories—instead, you want to get hands-on with experiments, design processes, and solve real problems—this major is for you. Many Chinese universities have strong practical programs in bioengineering. For example, Jiangnan University is famous for fermentation engineering, East China University of Science and Technology excels in bioreactor design, and Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are at the forefront of synthetic biology. In the lab, you'll work with cool equipment like PCR machines, fermenters, and chromatographic analyzers.
