Program overview
Rehabilitation engineering, simply put, uses mechanical, electronic, and computer technologies to design assistive devices for people with impaired physical functions. Examples include smart prosthetics, exoskeleton robots, hearing aids, rehabilitation training systems, and more. You'll study hardcore engineering courses like mechanical design, circuits, sensors, and signal processing, as well as medical knowledge such as human anatomy, sports biomechanics, and fundamentals of rehabilitation medicine. Core courses include: Fundamentals of Rehabilitation Engineering, Principles of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Human-Computer Interaction, Intelligent Control, Biomechanics, etc. Many Chinese universities (e.g., Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University) have dedicated labs and industry-academia collaborations in this field, giving you access to real clinical needs. This program suits students who are hands-on, empathetic, and enjoy interdisciplinary challenges — you need to understand both technology and the pain and expectations of users.
