Program overview
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary field—simply put, it's about "applying engineering thinking to healthcare." In college, you'll learn how to combine engineering knowledge from electronics, mechanics, computer science, and materials with medicine and biology to design devices that can diagnose, treat, or even replace human functions. Core courses include: medical instrument design, biosignal processing (e.g., ECG and EEG analysis), medical imaging technologies (CT, MRI principles), biomechanics, biomaterials, and the application of programming and machine learning in healthcare. Many Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, Tsinghua, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are strong in medical imaging and surgical robots, while Huazhong University of Science and Technology has expertise in biomaterials. This major is ideal for hands-on engineering students who are interested in medicine but don't want to become doctors, or for those who want to use technology to solve real clinical problems.
