Program overview
Pharmaceutical engineering is essentially about studying how to take a drug from the lab to the factory and then to the patient. You need to understand not only how drugs are synthesized (chemistry), but also how to produce them using microorganisms or cells (biotechnology), and even more importantly, how to design production processes and control quality (engineering). Core courses include medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical technology, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). A unique advantage in Chinese universities is that many schools have close ties with pharmaceutical companies, giving you exposure to real-world cases from generics to innovative drugs, and even opportunities for factory internships. This major suits those who enjoy hands-on work, don't mind chemistry and biology, and don't want to stay in the lab all day—because you'll need to consider costs, efficiency, and regulations.
