Program overview
The Marxist theory major might sound a bit "highbrow," but it's actually quite down-to-earth. Simply put, you'll systematically study the ideas of Marx and Engels, as well as their later development and application in China. You'll engage with foundational theories like Marxist philosophy, political economy, and scientific socialism, and also explore the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Party history and Party building, and the international communist movement. Core courses include "Selected Readings of Marxist Classics," "History of Marxist Development," "Marxism Abroad," and "Principles of Ideological and Political Education." This major is especially suitable for students interested in philosophy, politics, and social issues, who enjoy thinking about "how the world works" and "how society changes." Chinese universities have a unique advantage in this field: many have dedicated schools of Marxism with strong faculty and access to a wealth of primary sources and real-world cases. For example, you'll see how Marxist theory guides China's reform and opening-up, poverty alleviation, and common prosperity. If you enjoy reading, writing papers, and debating, or if you aspire to work in research, teaching, policy analysis, or international exchange, this major will give you a solid theoretical foundation and critical thinking skills.
