Program overview
Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering, simply put, is about studying how to use water wisely, manage it well, and make it generate electricity for us. You might be involved in designing a dam, planning a reservoir, or optimizing an urban water supply system. Core courses include hydraulics (how water flows), hydrology (rainfall and river patterns), structural mechanics (can the dam withstand pressure), hydraulic structures (how to design gates and spillways), hydropower stations (how turbines generate electricity), and water resources planning. This major suits students who enjoy physics and math, don't mind field work, and are curious about large-scale engineering. Chinese universities have a unique advantage in this field: many professors have participated in world-class projects like the Three Gorges Dam and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Labs feature scaled-down dam and river models, and you can even conduct hands-on experiments. If you're interested in solving practical problems through action, there are plenty of hands-on opportunities here.
