Program overview
Hydraulics and River Dynamics is a core direction of hydraulic engineering. Simply put, it's the study of how water flows and how rivers change. The hydraulics part focuses on basic laws of flow velocity, pressure, energy, etc., such as how water dissipates energy during dam discharge or how urban drainage pipes are designed. River dynamics focuses on how sediment is transported by water, and how riverbeds silt up or erode—for example, why the Yangtze River channel needs dredging, or why the lower Yellow River is a "suspended river." Core courses include Hydraulics, River Dynamics, Sediment Transport Mechanics, Computational Hydraulics, River Simulation, etc. You'll learn to use physical models and computer software (like MIKE, Delft3D) to simulate water flow and riverbed changes. This major is suitable for students who like physics and math, are curious about natural phenomena, and are willing to do experiments or programming. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, Hohai University, Wuhan University, and Tsinghua University all have large experimental flumes and field observation stations, allowing you to directly engage with real engineering problems.
