Program overview
Hydraulic and Hydroelectric Engineering, simply put, is the big engineering of working with water. You'll learn how to design dams and hydropower stations, how to make rivers behave—generating electricity, preventing floods, and irrigating farmland. Core courses include Hydraulics (studying how water flows), Engineering Mechanics (calculating structural stability), Hydraulic Structures (how to build dams and sluices), Hydropower Stations (power generation principles and equipment), and Water Resources Planning (how to use water wisely). Chinese universities are strong in this field—for example, Hohai University, Wuhan University, and Tsinghua University—all with excellent labs and field internship opportunities. This major suits students who like hands-on work, don't mind being outdoors, and have some interest in physics and math. If you're fascinated by large-scale infrastructure or want to solve water resource issues, this is a great fit.
