Program overview
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering is a graduate program under Civil Engineering. Simply put, it studies how to make buildings, bridges, dams, and other structures safer when facing disasters like earthquakes, typhoons, floods, and landslides, reducing losses. You'll learn core courses such as Structural Dynamics, Earthquake Engineering, Wind Engineering, Disaster Risk Assessment, and Protection Engineering, and you'll also use computer simulations and experimental testing. China is a disaster-prone country, with many real-world cases from the Wenchuan earthquake to recent typhoons. Universities have plenty of hands-on research projects—for example, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Tsinghua University have strong teams and labs in this field. If you enjoy hands-on work, don't mind physics and math, and want your knowledge to truly help people, this program is a great fit.
