Program overview
Railway Engineering falls under the civil engineering category, but it is more specialized in railway systems than general civil engineering. You will study core courses such as track structure, subgrade engineering, bridges and tunnels, and railway route selection, and also get exposed to cutting-edge technologies like high-speed rail and heavy-haul railways. Chinese universities have strong practical resources in this field—for example, Southwest Jiaotong University and Beijing Jiaotong University have real railway test lines and simulation platforms. It is suitable for students who enjoy hands-on work and are interested in transportation infrastructure; a solid foundation in math and physics will give you an edge. The coursework is not easy, but what you learn is very practical—by graduation, you will understand how a railway goes from blueprint to operation.
