Program overview
Civil engineering, simply put, is about studying how to build various buildings and infrastructure safely and economically. Core courses include: mechanics (theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, structural mechanics), materials science (concrete, steel), structural design (buildings, bridges, roads), geotechnical engineering (foundations, slopes), construction technology and management, and more. Math and physics are foundational, but don't worry – instructors will guide you step by step from theory to practice. This major suits students who enjoy hands-on work, have patience, and are sensitive to spatial structures. If you loved building with blocks or LEGO as a child, or are curious about skyscrapers and sea-crossing bridges, civil engineering will be a great fit. Chinese universities offer strong practical teaching in this field – for example, Tongji University, Tsinghua University, and Zhejiang University all have large structural labs and off-campus internship bases. You'll get to make concrete test blocks, test steel beam load capacity, and even participate in model making for real projects.
