Program overview
Ocean Engineering sounds cool, but it's actually very practical—it's about learning how to build things at sea and extract resources from the ocean. At the graduate level, you'll dive deep into marine environments, wave theory, design of offshore structures (like drilling platforms, offshore wind turbines, submarine pipelines), and marine geotechnical engineering (how to build foundations on the seabed). Core courses include Fluid Mechanics for Ocean Engineering, Offshore Structural Dynamics, Marine Geotechnical Engineering, and Marine Engineering Materials and Corrosion Protection. If you enjoy hands-on work, are curious about the ocean, and aren't afraid of math and mechanics, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique strengths in ocean engineering—for example, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tianjin University, Dalian University of Technology, and Zhejiang University. Located near the coast, they have their own experimental wave tanks and offshore test sites, allowing you to learn by doing. Plus, China is rapidly advancing in offshore wind, deep-sea mining, and marine ranching, so you'll get exposure to cutting-edge projects.
