Program overview
Water Resources Engineering is simply the engineering discipline that deals with "water." You might design dams, reservoirs, canals, or study how to keep cities from flooding, how to ensure farmland gets enough water, and how to treat wastewater to restore rivers. Core courses include hydraulics (how water flows), engineering mechanics (structural stability), hydrology and water resources (calculating rainfall and runoff), soil mechanics (foundation stability), and hydraulic structures (building dams, gates, etc.). If you enjoy solving practical problems, don't mind math and physics, and care about the environment and sustainable development, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have strong practical advantages in this field—for example, Tsinghua University, Hohai University, and Wuhan University all have large experimental flumes, numerical simulation platforms, and even direct involvement in mega-projects like the Three Gorges Dam and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, giving you access to cutting-edge cases and real data.
