Specialization introduction

Major introduction

The Steel Metallurgy program teaches you how to produce steel efficiently and greenly. It is the cornerstone of industry, and China is a global leader in this field.

Program overview

Steel metallurgy, simply put, is the study of how to turn iron ore into the steel we use every day. You will learn the entire process from mining, beneficiation, ironmaking, steelmaking to continuous casting and rolling. Core courses include Metallurgical Physical Chemistry, Ferrous Metallurgy, Metal Materials Science, and Transport Phenomena in Metallurgy. Lab sessions will let you operate small blast furnaces and converter models, and even visit steel plants to see molten iron flow. This major suits students who are hands-on, enjoy chemistry and physics, and are curious about industrial manufacturing. China is the world's largest steel producer, with companies like Baowu, Angang, and Shagang boasting world-class technology. Many universities (e.g., University of Science and Technology Beijing, Northeastern University) have advanced metallurgy labs, and professors have rich factory experience. International students here not only learn solid theory but also get exposure to cutting-edge green metallurgy technologies like hydrogen-based metallurgy and carbon capture.

Major prospects

Career prospects
